Embrace Your Imperfect Life
Why do so many of us strive for perfection? Perfection is overrated and elusive. How much fun would it be if every day of your life were perfect? Not much.
I started thinking about this because I was wearing a shirt earlier this week that said, “Life is Crap.” It is a parody on the Life is Good shirts. My shirt has the picture of a cat in a litter box, but her rear end is hanging off the other side of it.
An older man saw me and said. “Life is crap? I sure hope not!” It made me think about that. No, life isn’t crap. But, you do need a sense of humor. I don’t think he saw the whole concept. But, either way, I thought about how my week had been going. I could have thought it was a crappy week, and with good reason. I made more returns than purchases at Home Depot trying to get my condo ready to rent, along with a slew of other things that happened.
Monday—I got up late and missed going to the gym. We ordered some doors for our house about 9 weeks ago. They were supposed to be installed with 6 weeks. They called to let us know it would be another 2 weeks!
Tuesday—A prospective client canceled our appointment at the last minute. I ran late from another appointment and missed my call with my Virtual Assistant.
Wednesday—Got the time wrong on my Dad’s wound care appointment. So I missed seeing the doctor. Picked up a mirror for our hall bathroom in our condo rental, and the mirror was too long. It covered the light switch and towel holder. Had to return it and get a new one.
Thursday—Woke up and got dressed for the day. Started doing my hair and spilled a glass bottle of hair oil all over the bathroom floor and my dress! I had to clean it up before my cats stepped on the pieces of glass. Then, I had to change my clothes. Needless to say, I started my day late again.
Went to Home Depot and bought blinds for the windows of our rental. The Home Depot associate cut them too short for the brackets to work properly.
Friday—Went to the doctor’s for an exam and to get the results of my blood work from the week before. Waited for over an hour before I saw the doctor. Then she told me that I have high cholesterol. First time I have ever been told that! I have always had low cholesterol. Surely, there’s a mistake!
Leaving the doctor’s office, I got into my car, and the steering wheel wouldn’t turn. I called the American Automobile Association (AAA) for a tow. We got to the shop, and I was told it was the Harmonic Balancer. It would be about $600!!
After thinking about my crazy imperfect week—I decided to take another look at all the wonderful blessings the week brought…
Monday—finally got the rest I needed to start off the week. Got a call from the carpet installers about putting our carpet into our rental unit. They are installing it much sooner than expected.
Sold our dresser that had been on Craigslist for a couple of weeks and got what we wanted for it.
Tuesday—Made some time to go to the Surfside Beach Farmers Market with my husband. We got some wonderful vegetables and local honey for my allergies. Later that day, I had an amazing hot stone massage that totally relaxed me.
Then, I went to meet with our investment advisor to invest some money, and he had some great ideas on where to invest. He also gave me a big discount on the commission fees.
We sold our console TV for $50. We were afraid we were going to have to pay someone to come pick it up. Salvation Army won’t even take them anymore. But, it was a really nice TV and the man who bought it loved it!
I got to go to my wonderful support group for people caring for their elderly parents, and listen to some really inspiring women.
Wednesday—Met my Dad at the wound care center for his biweekly appointment. He was thrilled when I showed up, and I know it made his day since he didn’t remember seeing me the day before. His face lit up when I walked into his room.
I was blessed to have lunch with my cousin. I only see him twice a year during both bike weeks.
Thursday—I went to my monthly women’s networking group, which I thoroughly enjoy. We sat outside, and the weather was beautiful. I had an appointment with a new client at a wonderful little gem of a coffee house. My new client was delightful to talk with, and I will definitely go back to the coffee house.
Friday—I went to the doctor’s for an exam and to get the results of my blood work. Found out that I have high cholesterol. As my Physician’s Assistant turned to leave, she said, “By the way, stay away from shrimp. I have seen patients with normal cholesterol levels eat shrimp before being tested, and it skyrocketed.” Well, I eat shrimp almost everyday on my salad at lunch. I will stop for a while and get tested again.
When I got outside I had to call AAA because I couldn’t steer my car. The truck arrived in less than 10 minutes. The driver knew what the problem was right away. I received an estimate from the shop. I ended up paying less than quoted.
Life may not be perfect, but it truly is good!
